SUBNAUTICA: INFO
IC INFORMATION
NAME: Rose
AGE: Young adult. (I'd guess early twenties.)
CANON: Tales of Zestiria
CANON POINT: Right before the start of the war in Hyland.
CANON INFORMATION: Wiki!
PERSONALITY:
Rose is playful, friendly, easygoing and outgoing. On the stark opposite side of things, however, when it comes to matters of life or death, Rose is very serious, often judging who deserves to live and who deserves to die based on her own moral compass and personal sense of justice.
Rose is an orphan, never having known her parents as they died in a war, but when she was young, a guild called the Windriders took her in. Unfortunately, Zestiria's writing is a little nuts sometimes and the backstory as to when and how the Windriders met Rose and developed into the Sparrowfeathers/Scattered Bones is more or less both confusing and nonexistent, so this part is tricky to pin down, and I'll do my best to keep it short in order to keep everyone's sanity intact, including mine! As far as I've gathered, the Windriders were a group of travelers, and after being betrayed by nobility and their own kingdom, they decided to take justice into their own hands and rebel, banding together as undercover assassins and calling themselves the Scattered Bones. Their cover up from hereon out is a simple merchant guild called the Sparrowfeathers, giving them a free pass that permits them to travel just about anywhere they want to go.
Putting all that nonsense aside, the most important thing to remember regarding Rose herself is that she's always considered the members of the guild nothing less than family, and during Zestiria's timeline, the closest thing to a home she has is the Scattered Bones' hideout. When her longtime friend from the Windriders, Dezel, passes away, she tells him with a smile that the years she's spent with her makeshift family have been the happiest years of her life. She wouldn't be the person she is without her experiences through all of them.
Even when their priorities change, Rose still takes great pride in her work as a merchant, proving herself trustworthy and keeping her prices fair. Tying into her assassination work, however, Rose is adept in combat, able to easily dodge incoming hits and extremely quick on her feet. Upon meeting Sorey outside of his run in with the Sparrowfeathers, she saves his life despite not knowing what compelled her to jump in, but threatens afterward that if Sorey, the Shepherd, resorts to hurting or killing people, Rose will not hesitate to put an end to him. Perhaps surprisingly, this is the beginning of their friendship and partnership.
Despite her resonance with seraphim, Rose is petrified of them at first, unable to see them despite hearing them. Mikleo is the person who soothes her into conquering her fear and joining Sorey, agreeing to armatization, a skill that she and Sorey alone share. Up until Mikleo, Lailah, Edna and Zaveid, Dezel was the only seraphim she knew and interacted with. Dezel is the reason her high resonance enabling her to see and interact with seraphim is so present, but that right there is another long story, so, moving on!
Being as social as she is, she gets along well with everyone in the party soon enough; when she meets Alisha, the two of them hit it off right away, laughing and joking around. Their relationship is greatly expanded upon post-game and undoubtedly one of the most important relationships Rose has, but Rose's canon point is set long before her time spent with Alisha.
Rose tends to act on instinct alone rather than think things through carefully, but the majority of the time, her gut doesn't fail her. This is a good reason why she is so compatible with Sorey, a person pure at heart and always set on doing anything possible to refrain from hurting others. Between her and Sorey, Rose's stance is that she should be doing the killing, dirtying hands that are already tainted. When Sorey is confronted with no option other than having to kill, something he's clearly petrified of and broken up about, Rose beats him to the punch, telling Sorey that his job is to give life, and her job is to take it. Lailah states that she had thought Rose to be tough and callous, but she came to learn that she is the opposite.
That being said, Rose does what she does because when it comes to protecting both innocent civilians and those she cares about, she won't hesitate in the slightest. When things come to full throttle, chances are Rose is the one charging in headfirst before anyone else - sometimes recklessly, occasionally getting her into some trouble. Fortunately, Rose is pretty crafty, and she's good at getting herself out of it. An assassin always has to be on their toes, right?
At times, Rose can be brutally honest, occasionally giving Sorey a much needed reality check on the severity of the situation they're all in - a contrast to her views much earlier in her journey, where she said that when things get too tough, they can always just run away. Soon enough, she realized that she's in it for the long haul, and she hasn't changed her mind since, always having everyone's back no matter the circumstances. In some ways, Rose is similar to Lailah, who is much gentler in comparison, but the two share a bond, agreeing that they get along so well because, in their own words, they're both independent women.
It's rare to see her without a smile on her face in good company, but when that smile isn't present, chances are she's dead serious. She isn't the type of person to carry a burden of regrets on her shoulders, having made the choices she's made for a reason. When questioned, she states that she's proud to be an assassin, but despite her honesty, Rose isn't the type to share anything that might be burdening her without prompting. The only time we see her shed tears is when Dezel passes, and that's only after keeping on an air of all smiles for as long as she could. When things get rough, she seems to bounce back in no time regardless of feelings she's still carrying deep down.
Even with all these complicated factors of her personality, Rose is very teasing, almost constantly joking around, smiling, laughing, and poking fun at the others. She can be both overenthusiastic and easily excited, but when a situation is complicated or simply a pain in the ass, she'll often make sarcastic or annoyed remarks when spoken to. Unlike Sorey and Mikleo (along with Alisha, as well), Rose is annoyed by the ruins they have to trek through, quite vocal about her boredom with Sorey and Mikleo's constant gushing about history and calling them out on being the nerds that they are.
To wrap this all up in the simplest way I can, overall Rose is a character who is much more complicated and complex than she seems, with myriad layers to her personality and who she is at her core. Perhaps the most important thing about Rose, though, is that she never once surrenders her ideals.
ABILITIES:
Rose is an undercover assassin and a vigilante. This means that she's skilled in combat, wielding two daggers.
More importantly, she has the ability to see and communicate with seraphim - spirit-like beings that the vast majority of human can't see - thanks to a naturally high resonance. Having made a pact with Sorey to be his squire (his right hand woman, essentially), Rose is also able to armatize with them, meaning she gets neat elemental powers and a cool altered appearance. Normally, people cannot see these changes in appearance, nor the seraph involved. Her weapon and elemental abilities change depending on which seraph she is armatized with.
It's noteworthy that these abilities and contracts can only be made through Lailah, the first to contract with Sorey when he took on the role of the Shepherd. She has contracted with Lailah, Mikleo, Edna, and Zaveid.
INVENTORY:
Her regular clothes, Sparrowfeathers outfit, and Scattered Bones disguise, plus her twin daggers.
MEMORY ALTERATION: Not too long before they were planning on temporarily splitting up to handle their own business before jumping into the thick of war, Rose fell through a crack in some ruins she was traversing with Sorey and the rest of the party. She seemed to lose sight of Sorey, slipped when she turned around, and when she pulls herself together, there's the ocean amidst all that rubble!
Rose's arrival is forced, and all her memories remain intact.
